(P4) Resp Patho: Interstitial pneumonia Flashcards

1
Q

Identify:

A

Interstitial pneumonia

  1. Most common cause is viral infection of the lung by viruses (CMV, Varicella, HSV)
  2. septa

Q

Identify this lesion

What is the most common cause?

(name all that apply)

A

Interstitial pneumonia

  • The most common cause is viral infection of the lung
  • CMV, varicella, Herpes simplex virus (HSV)
  • Viruses affect the alveolar epithelium and cause mononuclear infiltration*

Q

Identify lesion:

Who is most affected by this lesion

and what are the syptoms?

A

Interstitial pneumonia

Children, elderly patients

  • -Often asymptomatic, no changes in x-ray*
    • Dilated interstitial parts of the lung, airspaces preserved*

Symptoms:

  • ▪ Long-term cough*
  • ▪ Reduced lung capacity*

Q

identify lesion:

What is its Morphology?

A

Interstitial pneumonia

Necrosis of type 1 epithelial cells and hyaline membrane formation

(Type 1 – most sensitive to damage and loss of integrity (intra-alveolar)

Morphology:

    • No circumscribed changes.*
  • -More yellow areas suspected (in autopsy sample). Newborn might die from interstitial pneumonia*

Q

Identify

and

provide Microscopy of this slide:

A

Interstitial pneumonia

  • -Thickened septa containing cells (inflammatory cells – lymphocytes, plasma cells)
  • Dilated capillaries.*
  • -Hyaline membrane covers septa wall (from necrotic debris of injured cells).*
  • -Can cause death when large areas covered*
    • Bronchi normal with no infiltration*
