(P2) Dis. of Imm: Polymyositis Flashcards
Name this Slide :)
Define:
- Polymyositis*
- is a type of chronic inflammation of the muscle_s _related_ to _dermatomyositis and _inclusion body myositis_.
- Its name means “inflammation of many muscles”.
- The inflammation of polymyositis is mainly found in the endomysial layer of skeletal muscle,
Name this slide :)
What is it called when “Skin” is involved?
Polymyositis
Dermatomyositis – when skin is involved
- Name this slide :)*
- Describe all that apply to this slide*
Polymyositis
- Fragmented muscle fibers (smaller sections of muscle fibers next to oneanother)*
- Inflammatory infiltrates (section of the small purple/pink cells grouped together)*
Polymyositis
Define this disease:
Polymyositis
is a type of inflammatory myopathy, which refers to a group of muscle diseases characterized by chronic muscle inflammation and weakness.
The muscles affected by polymyositis are the skeletal muscles (those involved with making movements) on both sides of the body.
Define:
“chronic inflammatory myopathy”
“chronic inflammatory myopathy”
The inflammatory myopathies are a group of diseases that involve chronic (long-standing) muscle inflammation, muscle weakness, and, in some cases, muscle pain.
Myopathy is a general medical term used to describe a number of conditions affecting the muscles.
Polymyositis
what other 2 conditions are also involved
- Dermatomyositis – when skin is involved*
- Chronic inflammatory myopathy*
Plymyositis
Who is at risk:
- Women, blacks*
- Patients with malignancy (paraneoplastic syndrome)*
Plymyositis
Signs/Clinical symptoms
- Weakness of muscle (tumor of stomach – GI tract) most common leasion!*
- Destruction of the skeletal muscles by cytotoxic T cells*
- Dermatomyositis – rash on the upper eyelids, face, trunk*
- Infiltration of the inflammatory cells (T lymphocytes), mostly within the fascies*
- Focal necrosis*
- Fibrosis*
- Regeneration of single muscle fibers*
o Enlarged nuclei
o Basophilic cytoplasm
Polymyositis
Q. What is the most typical clinical symptom of the disease
Muscle weakness
Myalgia
Definition: Myalgia describes muscle aches and pain, which can involve ligaments, tendons and fascia, the soft tissues that connect muscles, bones and organs
Inflammaroty myopathies
define:
Are a hererogenous group of acquired disorders, all of which feature:
- symmetric poroximal muscle weakness
- increased serum levelsl of muscle-derived enzyme
- nonsuppurative inflammation of skeletal muscle
Plymyositis
Microscopically:
1. Inflammaroty infiltrate consists of lymphocytes and mycrophages
2. Necrosis and phgocytosis of single muscle fibers
3. A mixture of regenerating and atrophic muscle fibers
4. Fibrosis
