(P4) Cardiac: Interstitial Myocarditis Flashcards
Name Slide
Interstitial myocarditis
Name slide
Refers to what type of inflammation which is associated with what?
Common age?
Intestitial myocarditis
Myocarditis refers to generalized inflammation of the myocardium associated with necrosis and degeneration of myocytes
(the def. especially excludes ischemic heart disease)
It can occure in any age, common between 1‐10 years old
- Interstitial myocarditis*
- Can be caused by: Infectious or Noninfectious- explain ?*
Caused by:
– Infectious: viral, bacterial, fungi, rickettsia, parasites (Echinococcus, Trichinela)
–viruses – coxackie, echo, influenza, HIV, rickettsia, toxins
– Noninfectious: radiation, sarcoidosis, uremia, rheumatic fever, SLE, Reumatoid artritis
Interstitial myocarditis
Macro:
myocardium is typically flabby
and
often mottled with pale* and *hemorrhagic areas
Interstitial myocarditis
Micro:
– disrupted myocytes with a prominent
interstitial infiltrate
composed of lymphocytes and macrophages
– fibrosis
Symptoms of
Interstitial myocarditis:
‐ arrhythmia
‐ tachycardia
‐ dyspnea
‐ pulmonary edema
‐ swollen legs

Identify:
Interstitial myocarditis
- Interstitial myocarditis*
- What types of inflammatory cells are present?*
- Which predominates?*
lymphocytes(predominates)
and
macrophages
Interstitial myocarditis
What age does this normally occur?
most commonly between age of 1-10 years old
Interstitial myocarditis
Give 4 examples of causative agents of this disease from different groups:
1) Viruses: coxakie, ECHO, influenza
2) bacteria: chlamydiae, ricketsiae
3) immune related reactions: rheumatic fever
4) sarcoidosis
The most frequent cause of this lesion is…
Interstitial myocarditis
Virus (ECHO)
