OXYGEN THERAPY Flashcards
- a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas
- Slightly heavier than air
- considered as a drug
oxygen
administration of oxygen at a concentration greater than that found in the environmental atmosphere (>21%)
oxygen therapy
a treatment that provides extra oxygen to the tissues of the body through the lungs & is provided to a patient as a supplement to normal respiration.
oxygen therapy
as an emergency measure how much oxygen can a nurse give without physician’s order?
1-2 lpm
a decrease in the arterial oxygen tension in the blood
hypoxemia
insufficient oxygen anywhere in the body
hypoxia
Oxygen by itself will not burn or explode, but it does facilitate ___
combustion
what types of fabric do you need to avoid when administering oxygen therapy?
wool and synthetic fabrics
usually painted green or has distinctive green markings
oxygen cylinder
- includes the pressure gauge, pressure reducing valve & the flow meter
- regulates oxygen pressure
regulator
indicates how much oxygen remains in the cylinder
pressure gauge
how much is a full tank of oxygen?
at least 2000 psi
what psi is a tank considered to be empty?
500 psi
- adds water vapor to inspired air
- provides 20% to 40% humidity
- prevents mucous membranes from drying & becoming irritated
humidifer
- most common method
- inexpensive
- “nasal prongs”
- delivers 24-45% oxygen at flow rates of 2-6 lpm
nasal cannula
- cannot deliver high O2 concentrations
- requires nose breathing
nasal cannula
tube made of flexible rubber or plastic for delivering oxygen inserted through the nose into the posterior nasal pharynx
nasal catheter
- for mouth breathers and claustrophobic clients
- not appropriate for neonates
nasal catheter
how to measure nasal catheter
pt’s nose to the earlobe
usual size of nasal catheter
8-10 Fr
Various sizes available; delivers higher O2 concentration than cannula
face mask
- with side vents; provides a reservoir over the face into which oxygen flows
- 40-60% at 5-8 lpm
- good for short term use
simple mask
- with an inflatable bag that stores 100% oxygen
- some CO2 always remains within the mask & is reinhaled
- 50-60% at 6-10 Lpm
partial rebreather mask
- with an inflatable bag and one-way valve
- 95-100% at flows of 6-10 Lpm
non-rebreather mask
