What is the Purpose of Salvage work
to reduce fire, water, and smoke damage during and after fires
What are the two folds for salvage covers
- Accordion Fold (dry)
- finished side up, 9 inch folds (to fit in locker) - Wet fold

- One-person throw
- Two-person Counter pay off
- Two-person balloon throw
One-person throw
should only be used when covering materials that can not be broken and when throwing action will not cause any damage

used where conditions require exact and careful placing of salvage covers

if there is sufficient vertical space and is quick to deploy

fold it 30 cm (12ft0 back), overlap then roll the overlap

What material is salvage covers made of
- tightly woven, waterproof canvas
- Herculite (lightweight, chemically inert and waterproof material)
What is overhaul
all operations conducted after the main body of the fire has been extinguished
- searching and extinguishing hidden/remaining fire
- placing building and its contents in a safe condition
- determine the cause of fire
- recognizing and preserving signs of arson
Overhaul safety
toxic gases - significant threat during overhaul (CO and HCN are common)
- use drager, wear PPE and SCBA until overhaul is complete
- charged hoseline should be present in case of rekindle
hidden fire indicators - sight
- discoloration
- peeling paint
- smoke emission from cracks
- crackled plaster
- rippled wallpaper
- burned areas
TIC
- may not provide quality images behind reflective materials
- if there are discrepancies, the space should be opened and visibly inspected
Overhaul procedure
typically begins in area of most severe fire involvement, determine the path the fire travelled
pulling ceilings
use pike pole, do not stand directly under, position between area being pulled and the doorway
