Ovarian cycle and uterine cycle Flashcards
Follicular phase
Part of ovarian cycle. Primary follicle matures and secretes estrogen. Maturation of follicle is under control of FSH. Lasts 13 days.
Ovulation phase
Ovarian cycle 2nd stage. Secondary oocyte releases from the ovary. Triggered by surge of LH. Causes remnants of follicle to become corpus luteum. Occurs day 14
Luteal phase
3rd stage of ovarian cycle. Full formation of corpus luteum in ovary that secretes estrogen and progesterone. Life span of 2 weeks. Lasts 14 days
True or False. Hormones secreted from ovary during the ovarian cycle direct the uterine cycle
True
Goal of uterine cycle
Prepares endometrium for egg implantation
Mestruation
First stage of uterine cycle. Degeneration of corpus luteum with drop in estrogen and progesterone. Endometrial lining sloughs off
Proliferative
Second stage of menstrural cycle. Estrogen produced by the follicle induces proliferation of new endometrium
Secretory phase
3rd stage of uterine cycle. Estrogen and progesterone produced by corpus luteum increase development of endometrium including secretion of glycogen, lipids, and other materials. Lasts 14 days
If pregnancy does not occur
Corpus luteum dies. Decline in secretion of estrogen and progesterone trigger menstruration.
