Outcomes are controlled by outside factors. Learned helplessness

Laws. Precisely defined, publicly presented, accompanied by penalties
Mores
Norms that are highly important for benefit of society and are strictly enforced.
Informal Norms
understood but less precise with no specific punishment. Ex: Handshake
Folkways
Norms that are less important but shape behavior. Ex: style of dress, greeting

Process in which individual foresakes aspects of his or her own cultural tradition to adopt to those of a diff culture

Perspective that endorses equal standing for all cultural traditions
Subculture
Segment of society that shares distinct pattern of traditions and values that differ from that of a larger society
