Modes of Natural Selection Flashcards
directional selection
polygenic traits follow a bell-shaped curve with most individuals clustered around average. If natural selection removes those at one extreme, population average over time will move in the other direction
Divergent Selection
removes members near average. Overtime divergent selection will split population in two leading to new species
Stabilizing selection
both extremes of a trait are selected against driving population closer to average
artificial selection
humans intervene in mating of many animals and plants to obtain a specific breed with desired traits
sexual selection
animals don’t choose mates randomly but have rituals and displays that play a role in attracting and choosing mate
kin selection
animals that socially live share alleles with other individuals and will sacrifice themselves for sake of allele shared with another individual
