Ovarian Cancer Flashcards
Ovarian cancer is the worst reproductive cancer in women.
- There is no screening test
- It is difficult to diagnose
- 75% chance of already having mets at diagnosis
What are some risks/Et of ovarian cancer?
- Aging (~65 to 85yrs)
- Some inherited forms
- Familial risk
- Infertility ??
- Nulliparity ??
T or F:
If ovarian cancer has been inherited, this would be due to an autosomal recessive trait
F, autosomal dominant
What are the 3 diverse forms of ovarian cancer?
- Germ cells (oocyte)
- Stromal cells (connective tissue cells)
- Epithelial cells (~90%)
The progression of ovarian cancer is silent, where would you anticipate it might extend to? Could you expect seeding to occur?
- Extension: Fallopian tubes, uterus, other ovary
- Seeding: Liver, bowel, other structures within the
abdominal body cavity
What might trigger the 1st detection of ovarian cancer?
- Abdominal distention due to the inflation of the ovary
- Pressure on adjacent organs from the affect
ovary/structures may cause abdominal discomfort
What are mnfts of ovarian cancer?
- Early: non-specific GI mnfts
- Pelvic mass (1st, but late finding)
- Abdominal distention
- Urinary and bowel obstruction
- Ascites and dyspnea
- Pain
By the time abdominal distention, urinary and bowel obstruction, and ascites and dyspnea have become mnfts of ovarian cancer, what is likely to have happened?
Metastasis
What are the Dx for ovarian cancer?
- Transvaginal US
- Laparoscopy
- CA antigen 125 ??
- Not used for screening because it may be present
physiologically, levels fluctuate - Used to monitor and in high risk for ovarian cancer
- Not used for screening because it may be present
What is used to treat ovarian cancer?
- Aggressive approach
- Radical surgery
- Remove ovaries, uterus, tubes, and omentum
- Chemo following surgery
- Repeat laparoscopy (6-12 months later)
