Diverticular Disease Flashcards
T or F:
DIVERTICULUM indicates multiple DIVERTICULA
F, the other way around
What are the points of entry in the GI TRACT indicating the entry of?
These points allow for the entry of BVs which provide perfusion in the GI TRACT
What are 2 major components that may inc or dec the intraluminal pressure of the intestines?
- Diet (poor = inc pressure)
2. Bowel Fx (poor = inc pressure)
What does the term “out-pouching” refer to?
The protrusion of the wall of the bowel outside of the digestive tract
What is a more professional way to refer to the out-pouches of the bowel?
Diverticulum (is this singular or plural?)
Where do the diverticulum protrude through?
The points of entry made from BVs, which have been weakened d/t poor diet/bowel Fx
Where do diverticulum most commonly form in the body?
In the colon, specifically the sigmoid colon
Risk factors for diverticular disease? (4)
- Aging (80% > 85)
- Poor diet
- Constipation
- Inactivity
Why is aging a risk factor for diverticular disease?
General degeneration of tissue, dec bowel fx, and a poor diet
Why is constipation a risk factor for diverticular disease?
This will inc the intraluminal pressure of the bowels
Why is inactivity a risk factor for diverticular disease?
Movement incs peristalsis, and an inc in peristalsis will dec the transit time through the intestine.
How does a dec transit time affect absorption in the intestines?
Dec transit time = less absorption, which will result in softer tools
Quick overview of the process through which diverticula form:
- BV points of entry are weakened
- Mucosa herniates through the muscularis externa
- Diverticula forms
What is diverticulosis?
The formation and appearance of diverticula
What are the usual symptoms of diverticulosis?
It is usually asymptomatic, non-inflammatory
