Cirrhosis Flashcards
What is cirrhosis?
A complication of severe liver disease
What happens to the liver with cirrhosis?
Degenerative nodular liver with diffuse fibrosis
Cirrhosis is a leading cause of _______
Death
What is the link between alcoholism and hepatitis?
Alcoholism contributes to 60-70% of cirrhosis
What is the Et of cirrhosis?
- Alcoholism
- Viral hepatitis
- Biliary obstruction
- Metabolic disorders
- Toxic drugs
What is an example of a metabolic disease that may contribute to cirrhosis? Explain how it contributes.
Wilson disease
- Copper accumulates and deposits in vital organs
Explain the patho of cirrhosis in 5 steps:
dis a longggg one
- Hepatocyte necrosis = fibrosis around regenerating cells = nodular, non-Fx tissue
- Fibrosis = constricted vessels = altered perfusion = portal HTN = fluid shift = ascites
- Ducts constricted = bile stasis
- Metabolic waste clearance impeded
- Liver failure :/
What are the mnfts of cirrhosis?
- Anorexia
- Weakness
- Wt loss
- Jaundice
- Hepatomegaly
T or F:
Jaundice may be absent in some forms of cirrhosis
T
What are complications of cirrhosis?
- Portal HTN
- Ascites
- Varices rupture
- Massive hemorrhaging
- Splenomegaly
Why might there be splenomegaly accompanying cirrhosis?
The spleen is overworked because the slower blood flows, the longer blood takes to move in and out of the spleen, and in the meantime the more RBCs are recycled by the spleen
What is the Tx for cirrhosis?
To facilitate regeneration
- Diet should consist of small, high calorie meals
- NO alcohol
