ONCOLOGY Bladder Cancer Flashcards
The greatest risk factor for bladder cancer is___
smoking; nicotine irritates the lining of the bladder
The MAJOR symptom of bladder cancer__
Painless intermittent gross or microscopic hematuria (painless peeing of blood)
*same as cervical cancer…. painless bleeding*
what is an illeal conduit?
what’s another name of ilieal conduit?
when a piece of the ilium (a piece of your intestine) is turned into a bladder. the ureters are placed in 1 end, and in the other end is brought to the abdominal surface as a stoma.
- urostomy
ileal conduit: T OR F? This patient will be impotent
F! May or may not
Anytime you have a patient who has had any kind of surgery in the urinary tract and volume of urinary output drops at all, you must___
worry
ileal conduit: is it fine for this patient to drink 2000-3000mL of fluids per day?
yes
is mucous in this urine normal after a ileal conduit?
yes because your bladder is now made of intestines and intestines always make mucous
What time should the ileal conduit ostomy pouch be changed and do stoma skin care?
why?
while changing the bag and cleaning the skin, is it ok to put a 4 x 4 inside the stoma to absorb urine?
morning; that’s when urinary output will be at its lowest.
(it’s opposite for us because normal people pee first thing in the morning, but with these people, all they do is drink water all day and that’s what makes them pee. but at night, they can’t drink water because they’re sleeping.)
yes. just don’t forget to remove it… you never wanna clog up the urinary tract in any way because it will back up and cause renal failure.
