CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM Pulmonary Edema Flashcards
Pulmonary edema happens when the __ ventricle has failed, and blood is backing up to the___.
They experience severe___.
left;
lungs
hypoxia
When do these symptoms usually occur?
-nighttime when the patient is lying flat.
S/S of pulmonary edema:
- sudden onset
- breathless
- restless/anxious (due to hypoxia)
-productive cough (pink frothy sputum)
TX:
Lasix to decrease__ and __ through diuresis and vasodilation.
needs to be given over _ to __ minutes.
what happens when you give lasix too fast?
preload and afterload
1-2minutes
patient can bottom out or/and you can kill your hearing nerve (auto toxicity)
TX:
CAN GIVE bumex, nitroglycerine, digoxin, morphine sulfate , natrecore, primacor, dobutamine… they all do what?
as pulmonary edema treatments -they all decrease preload and afterload.
severe CHF is AKA__
cariogenic shock
what happens in cardiogenic shock?
Cardiogenic shock is a condition in which your heart suddenly can’t pump enough blood to meet your body’s needs. The condition is most often caused by a severe heart attack. *pump failure*
How does an IABP (intra aortic balloon pump) help?
The IABP reduces the workload on your heart, allowing your heart to pump more blood. The IABP is placed inside your aorta, the artery that takes blood from the heart to the rest of the body. The balloon on the end of the catheter inflates and deflates with the rhythm of your heart. This helps your heart pump blood to the body.
What’s the best position for the patient experiencing pulmonary edema?
-sit up with legs down.
