CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM Arterial Disorders Flashcards
Arteries carry___ blood
oxygenated
numbness, pain, cold, no pulse in an extremity is termed an______ and is an emergency.
acute arterial occlusion; you can lose the limb
BECAUSE THAT LIMB IS NOT GETTING ANY OXYGENATED BLOOD
Arterial disorders are more symptomatic in __ extremities.
lower
legs
1 major sign an arterial problem is___
intermittent claudication
What is intermittent claudication?
Intermittent claudication is a symptom of peripheral arterial disease. Intermittent claudication is a tight, aching, or squeezing pain in the calf, foot, thigh, or buttock that occurs during exercise, such as walking up a steep hill or a flight of stairs. This pain usually occurs after the same amount of exercise and is relieved by rest.
*happens because there is an increase demand for oxygen and this part of the body cannot deliver, so it switches to anaerobic metabolism which builds lactic aid*
Anytime you see or heart “bruit” think___
turbulent blood flow
If you’re having pain at rest, that means____
you have a severe obstruction
If you have an arterial problem, blood is having trouble getting all the down to the tips of your toes. So, if you elevated the affected extremity, you just made it even___
worst
DO NOT ___limbs that have arterial problems.
what do you do?
elevate;
you put it on a dependent position. dangle the extremity or their leg on the side of the bed to promote circulation.
You don’t elevate arteries, you elevate___ problems.
vein
Arterial disorders of the lower extremities are usually treated with___ or ___ to enhance circulation.
angioplasty (balloon or stent) or endarterectomy (Endarterectomy is the general term for the surgical removal of plaque from an artery that has become narrowed or blocked. )
radial artery feeds my____
carotid artery feeds my___
abdominal aorta feeds___
- hand
- brain
- everything from waist down
Buergers disease:
Buerger’s disease (thromboangiitis obliterans) is a rare disease of the arteries and veins in the arms and legs. In Buerger’s disease, your blood vessels become inflamed, swell and can become blocked with blood clots (thrombi). This eventually damages or destroys skin tissues and may lead to infection and gangrene. Buerger’s disease usually first shows in the hands and feet and may eventually affect larger areas of your arms and legs. *inflammation of veins and arteries* *they’ll experience pain and numbness at first*
Who is at most risk of getting buegers disease? it’s related to: TX?
- men (MALE FINGERS AND TOES)
- heavy smoking, getting too cold, and emotional upset.(anything causing vasoconstriction)
- Avoid the cold,
wear shoes that fit well ,
avoid foot trauma
stop smoking
hydrate well to get good blood flow by-pass surgery
RAYNAUD’S DISEASE:
Raynaud’s disease is a vascular disorder that causes intermittent interruption of blood flow to the extremities. The affected body part may turn white or blue and feel cold and numb until circulation improves. - FEMALE FINGERS
