[OLD] Biological Molecules - Polymers Flashcards
What are polymers made up of?
smaller molecules called monomers that are bonded to each other
Which monomers make up polypeptides/proteins?
amino acids
what bonds are used between amino acids to make up proteins?
peptide bonds
Which monomers make up polysaccharides/sugars?
monosaccharides
which bonds are used between monosaccharides to make up sugars?
glycosidic bonds
which monomers make up nucleic acids?
nucleotides
which bonds are used between nucleotides to make up nucleic acids?
phosphodiester bonds
why are triglycerides/lipids not technically polymers?
they consist of fatty acids and glycerol - 2 different molecules, therefore not monomers.
what is metabolism?
all the chemical reactions going on in the body at one time
what are anabolic reactions?
building molecules up
what are catabolic reactions?
breaking molecules down
what do condensation reactions do?
join monomers together, producing water as a byproduct
what do hydrolysis reactions do?
break polymers into their monomers, taking in water as a reagent
