Genetics and Variation - Biodiversity: Key Terms Flashcards
Binomial system
The system of naming species
Classification
The grouping of organisms
Taxonomy
The theory and practice of classification
Artificial classification
Classification that divides organisms according to differences that are useful at the time, e.g. colour
Phylogenetic classification
Based upon evolutionary relationships between organisms and their ancestors
Phylogeny
The evolutionary relations between organisms and their ancestors
Biodiversity
The general term used to describe variety in the living world
Species diversity
Refers to the number of different species and the number of individuals of each species within one community
Genetic diversity
Refers to the variety of genes possessed by the individuals that make up the population of a species
Ecosystem diversity
Refers to the range of different habitats from a small local habitat to the whole of the Earth
Species richness
The number of different species in a particular area at a given time
Habitat
The place where an organism normally loves and which is characterised by physical conditions and the types of other organisms present
Interspecific variation
When one species differs from one species to another
Intraspecific variation
When members of the same species differ from each other
Mean
An average value of data
