NSAID's Flashcards
1
Q
What are the generic and brand names of NSAID’s?
A
- Ibuprofen (Nurofen)
- Naproxen (Feminax)
- Diclofenac (Volterol)
2
Q
What is the method of action of NSAID’s?
A
- Inhibits prostaglandin production from arachidonic acid
- Via inhibiting cyclooxygenase (mainly COX-2 but not exclusively)
- COX is responsible for the:
- Integrity of gastric mucosal wall
- Maintain renal perfusion
- Inhibit thrombus formation
- Inflammation and pain
3
Q
What are the indications for NSAID’s?
A
- Mild to moderate pain
- Period pain
- Dental pain
- Pain related to inflammation e.g. RA, osteoarthritis, acute gout
4
Q
What are the contraindications for NSAID’s?
A
- Severe renal impairment
- Heart failure
- Liver failure
- Known NSAID hypersensitivity
- Prior peptic ulcer disease
- GI bleeding
- CV disease
5
Q
What are the side effects of NSAIDs?
A
- GI toxicity
- Indigestion
- Renal impairment
- ↑ risk of cardiovascular events e.g. MI, stroke
- Hypersensitivity reaction e.g. bronchospasm and angioedema
- Fluid retention
6
Q
What drugs interact with NSAIDs?
A
- Low dose aspirin - ↑ risk of GI ulceration
- Corticosteroids - ↑ risk of GI ulceration
- Anticoagulants - ↑ risk of GI bleeding
- SSRIs - ↑ risk of GI bleeding
- Venlafaxine - ↑ risk of GI bleeding
- ACE inhibitors – renal impairment
- Diuretics – renal impairment and ↓ therapeutic effect
- Antihypertensives - ↓ therapeutic effect
7
Q
What organ eliminates NSAIDs?
A
Kidney
8
Q
What information should be given to a patient taking NSAIDs?
A
- Should be taken before or with food
* Do not use for longer than 10 days with acute pain due to risks of side effects
