What is an example of a glycopeptide?
A
Vancomycin

Q
What is the method of action of glycopeptides?
A
- Inhibits growth and cross linking of peptidoglycan chains
* Stops the thick lipopolysaccharide cell wall of gram +ve bacteria forming

What are the indications for glycopeptides?
A
- Gram +ve infections e.g. endocarditis
* Antibiotic associated colitis caused by C.diff

- Renal impairment - ↑ risk of toxicity
* Elderly - ↑ risk of toxicity
5
Q
What are the side effects of glycopeptides?

- Thrombophlebitis
- Red man syndrome
- Anaphylactic type reaction
- Generalised erythema
- Hypotension
- Bronchospasm
- Immediate/delayed hypersensitivity
- Nephrotoxicity
- Ototoxicity
- Blood disorders e.g. neutropenia
- Toxicity – monitor drug dose carefully
