• Produces metabolites that stimulate the enteric nervous system to increase water (via electrolytes) and stimulate peristalsis
What are the indications for stimulant laxatives?
- Constipation
* Faecal impaction - dried, hard stools collect in your rectum and anus
What are the contraindications for stimulant laxatives?
- Biliary disease
- Intestinal obstruction
- CD
- UC
- Appendicitis
- Renal failure/diabetes/heart failure = hyperkalaemia
What are the side effects of stimulant laxatives?
- Abdo pain
- Cramping
- Melanosis coli (pigmentation of intestinal
What are the interactions of stimulant laxatives?
- Antiarrhythmics – causes hypokalaemia
* Diuretics – causes hypokalaemia
What is the route of elimination of stimulant laxatives?
• Faeces
What patient information should you give when taking a stimulant laxative?
• Make sure the patient understand they must drink plenty of water
