nose Flashcards
nose
projection in the centre of the face
consists of an external and internal portion
external portion of nose
triangle of cartilage and bone
covered with skin
lined with mucous membrane
entrance is known as nostrils or anterior nares
internal portion of nose
divided into 2 chambers by a partition or septum
the left and right cavities divide into 3 air passages
3 passages
Connected:
1) by openings with the paranasal sinuses
2 with the ears by the sustachian tubes
3) with regions of the eyes by the nasolacriminal ducts
functions of the nose
passage for air
warms and moistens inhaled air
its cillia and muccous membrane trap dust and other foreign matter
contains olfactory receptors, which sort odours
aids in phonation and the quality of voice
pharynx
aka. throat
musculomembranous tube
extends from base of skill, anterior to cervical vertebrae, and becomes continuous with the esophoagus
contains 3 pairs of lymphoid tissue, which are the tonsils
divided into 3 portions:
1) nasopharynx - behind the nose and contains the adenoids or pharyngeal tonsils
2) oropharynx- behind mouth, contains the palatine tonsils and lingual tonsils
3) laryngopharynx- located behind the larynx
how many openings are in the pharynx
7
2- eustachian tubes
2-posterior nares into te nasopharynx
rest- openings from the mouth into the oropharyn, and openings from the larynx and esophogus into the larngopharynx
functions of pharynx
passageway for air, food, drink and aids in phonation by changing its shape
functions of tonsils
accessory organs of the lymphatic system and aids in diltering bacteria and other foreign bacteria and substances from circulating lymph.
larynx
aka. voicebox
muscular, cartilaginous structure lined with mucous membrane
consists of 9 cartilages, bound together by muscles and ligaments
3 cartilages
1) thyroid cartilage- forms the adams apple, more prominan in men
2) epiglottic cartilage- aka. epiglottis, attached to superior border of the thyroid cartilage, covers entrance of larynx and during swallowing it acts as a lid to prevent aspiration of good into the trachea
3) cricoid cartilage- lowermost carilage of larynx, 2 folds, the narrow split at the opening btw the tue vocal cords, called the glottis, allows air to pass, vibrating the cords to produce sound
functions of larynx
- production of vocal sounds- high notes formed by short, tense, vocal cords, low notes formed by long, relaxed vocal cords
