Nonspecific Immune System Pt 1 Flashcards
nonspecific immune system aka
innate immune system
purpose of immune responses in general
identify + eliminate foreing invaders
nonspecific immune system overview
- body’s first line of defense
- same response to all threats trying to enter body
- acts quickly to destroy large numbers of pathogens
nonspecific immune system consists of
physical + chemical barriers to prevent pathogens from entering body
integumentary system roles (2)
- skin creates physical barrier few pathogens can penetrate
- tears and sweat on skin surface produce environment where only normal flora can grow
normal flora
- aka good bacteria
- produce lactic acid that inhibits growth of pathogenic bacteria
pathogenic bacteria
disease-causing bacteria
digestive system role
stomach acid + digestive secretions destroy microorganisms
respiratory system role
mucus membranes trap pathogens, cilia push them up to be coughed + spit out (or swallowed + destroyed in stomach)
inflammatory response functions (2)
- dilates blood vessels –> increased blood flow to infected region –> more immune cells brought to area
- makes person aware of infection
inflammatory response symptoms
- swelling
- pain
- redness
fever caused by
pyrogens (type of interleukin) increasing thermostatic set point of body
functions of increased body temp (3)
- interferes with pathogens ability to grow and replicate
- causes lysosomes to break down –> release enzymes that lyse infected cells
- promotes activity of white blood cells
lyse
act of lysosomes releasing enzymes that destroy infected cells
