Cardiac Cycle + BP Flashcards
heart beat
- aka cardiac cycle
- consists of contraction + relaxation of heart chambers
avg heart rate
70 beats per minute
length of heart beat
~ 0.85 seconds
systole
contraction of heart chambers
diastole
relaxation of heart chambers
why do atria contract for shorter time than ventricles
pump blood shorter distance (to ventricles rather than to entire body)
heart sounds
lub - dub
lub
atrioventricular valves (tricuspid + bicuspid) close
dub
semilunar (aortic + pulmonary) valves close
BP cuff official name
sphygmomanometer
how sphygmomanometer works
- measures pressure required to stop blood flow through brachial artery
- squeeze bulb inflates bladder (held over artery via cuff)
- once inflated, turn valve to slowly empty bladder and let blood flow again
- use stethoscope to hear first and last blood sounds displayed
second phase of cardiac cycle
atria in diastole, ventricles in systole (~0.30 sec)
third phase of cardiac cycle
all chambers in diastole (~0.45 sec)
systolic pressure
pressure in arteries during ventricular systole
diastolic pressure
pressure in arteries during ventricular diastole
