Limbic System Flashcards
1
Q
limbic system anatomy
A
- just below cerebral cortex
- contains pathways connecting frontol lobes, temporal lobes, thalamus, hypothalamus
2
Q
cingulate gyrus
A
- aka limbic lobe
- connects different lobes of cerebrum
3
Q
hippocampus
A
- memory center (memory retrieval and storage)
- part of limbic system –> that’s why emotional memories are strongest
4
Q
amygdala
A
- part of limbic system
- involved in emotions of rage + anger
5
Q
fornix
A
- bundle of nerve fibers
- connects to hippocampus
6
Q
mamillary bodies
A
- contain fibers that project into thalamus
- responsible for memory of smell
7
Q
limbic system functions
A
- ” feeling brain”
- affects emotional aspects of behavior (including rewards/consequences)
- crucial for learning and memory (short + long term)
- communicates with all sensory areas to awaken complex memories
8
Q
basal ganglia
A
- masses of gray matter deep within hemispheres of cerebrum
- part of limbic system
- work w/ cerebellum to regulate planning motor movements/motor learning
- have inhibitory effect on cerebral cortex (slow/control precise movement)
9
Q
parts of basal ganglia (4)
A
- putamen
- caudate nucleus
- globus pallidus (medial + lateral)
10
Q
parkinson’s
A
- disorder of basal ganglia
- causes apraxia
11
Q
apraxia
A
- difficulty with motor planning
- leads to rigid movements, difficulty executing motor plan
