Anatomy of Heart Flashcards
1
Q
pericardial cavity
A
- contains heart
- within thoracic cavity
- in anterior part of mediastinum between the lungs
2
Q
pericardium
A
- thick tough sac that encloses heart
- protects heart and anchors it to diaphragm
- inner + outer layers covered in smooth endothelium
- special fluid between 2 layers to allow heart to slide around with little friction
3
Q
myocardium
A
- layer of heart that contracts (makes up bulk of heart)
- composed mainly of skeletal muscle
- highly branched muscle fibers, attached via collagen connective tissue fibers that link all part of heart together
4
Q
endocardium
A
- white sheet of endothelium lining the heart
- continuous with lining of blood vessels
5
Q
septum
A
separates heart chambers into left and right sides
6
Q
fossa ovalis
A
- shallow depression in septum that separates the 2 atria
- in developing fetuses, this is open area for blood to bypass lungs
- closes during birth so lungs can receive oxygen once born
7
Q
4 one-way valves
A
- pulmonary
- aortic
- mitral (bicuspid)
- tricuspid
8
Q
pulmonary valve
A
controls flow leaving right ventricle to pulmonary trunk
9
Q
aortic valve
A
controls flow out of left ventricle to aorta
10
Q
mitral (bicuspid) valve
A
controls flow from left atrium to left ventricle
11
Q
tricuspid valve
A
controls flow from right atrium to right ventricle
12
Q
cardiovascular system
A
- closed circulatory system (blood goes from heart – body – heart)
- transports oxygen + nutrients to cells, waste away from cells
- prevents blood loss from ruptured vessels via clotting mechanisms
- fights invasion of body by foreign pathogens
- made up of: muscular heart, blood vessels, blood
