Cranial Nerves Flashcards
1
Q
cranial nerves overview
A
- 12 pairs
- attached to brain
- can be sensory, motor, or mixed
- control head/neck/ face (except vagus nerve)
2
Q
sensory nerves
A
long dendrites of only sensory neurons
3
Q
motor nerves
A
long axons of only motor neurons
4
Q
mixed nerves
A
long dendrites and long axons
5
Q
special sensory nerves
A
carry information for sight, smell, hearing, or balance
6
Q
CN I
A
olfactory nerve
- special sensory nerve –> sense of smell
- originates in olfactory epithelium
- terminates in olfactory bulbs
- attached to cerebrum (unlike all others, which are attached to brain stem)
7
Q
CN II
A
optic nerve
- special sensory nerve –> sense of sight
- originates in retina of each eye, crosses at optic chiasm
- synapses in thalamus, which sends info to visual cortex of occipital lobe
8
Q
CN III
A
oculomotor nerve
- motor nerve –> eye movement + pupil dilation
- somatic motor movement (muscles)
- visceral motor movement (pupils)
9
Q
purpose of pupil dilation
A
controls the amount of light let into the eye
10
Q
CN IV
A
trochlear nerve
- motor nerve: innervates superior oblique muscle –> eye movement
- somatic motor movement (muscles)
11
Q
CN V
A
trigeminal nerve
- mixed nerve –> mastication, sensation of face/nose/mouth
- 3 branches
12
Q
opthalmic branch of trigeminal nerve
A
- entirely sensory
- receives info from skin around forehead, eyebrows, upper part of nose
13
Q
maxillary branch of trigeminal nerve
A
- entirely sensory
- receives info from lower eyelids, upper lip/gums, part of pharynx
14
Q
mandibulary branch of trigeminal nerve
A
- sensory –> receives info from lower lip/gums, teeth, tongue (except taste)
- motor –> innervates muscles of mastication
15
Q
CN VI
A
abducens nerve
- motor nerve –> abduction of eye (outward/lateral mvmt)
- innervates lateral rectus muscles
