Lymphatic System Overview + Lymphatic Vessels Flashcards
1
Q
lymphatic system composed of
A
lymphatic vessels + lymphoid organs
2
Q
lymphatic system functions (3)
A
- takes up excess tissue fluid and returns it to bloodstream
- absorbs fats and releases them to bloodstream
- helps with immune defense
3
Q
lymph
A
plasma fluid that was forced out of blood capillaries to assist in delivering nutrient to tissues but was NOT reabsorbed into the blood stream
4
Q
lymph circulation pathway
A
one direction!
lymphatic capillaries –> lymphatic vessels –> L/R lymphatic ducts –> subclavian veins –> superior vena cava –> right atrium
5
Q
lymphatic capillaries
A
- closely connected to blood capillaries
- take up leftover fluid that becomes lymph
6
Q
lymphatic vessels
A
- extend through most parts of body
- have one-way flow valves like veins
- move lymph back toward heart via squeezing action of skeletal muscles + one way valves
- merge at left or right lymphatic ducts
7
Q
thoracic duct
A
- left lymphatic duct
- larger, drains lymph from: legs, abdomen, left thoracic, left arm, left head/neck
- drains to: left subclavian vein
8
Q
right lymphatic duct
A
- smaller lymphatic duct
- drains lymph from: right arm, right thoracic, right head/neck
- drains to: right subclavian vein
