Nervous System Overview Flashcards
1
Q
nervous system functions
A
- receives + processes sensory information
- sends signals to muscles + glands to initiate appropriate response
- integrates + controls other bodily systems
2
Q
nervous tissue
A
- forms system of electrical impulses (signals) between body cells for rapid communication
3
Q
2 main divisions of nervous system
A
- central nervous system (CNS)
2. peripheral nervous system (PNS)
4
Q
CNS
A
- brain + spinal cord
- sends impulses to PNS
- receives sensory info (via impulses) from PNS
5
Q
PNS
A
- all nerves outside brain/spinal chord (cranial + spinal nerves)
- 2 divisions: afferent (sensory) and efferent (motor)
6
Q
Afferent Division
A
- sensory division of PNS
- how PNS receives impulses from sensory organs
7
Q
Efferent Division
A
- motor division of PNS
- relays messages from CNS to muscles and glands
- 2 subdivisions: somatic & autonomic
8
Q
somatic nervous system
A
- subdivision of efferent division of PNS
- under conscious control
- responsible for movement of skin, joints, skeletal muscle
9
Q
autonomic nervous system
A
- subdivision of efferent division of PNS
- not under conscious control
- responsible for glands, smooth muscles of internal organs
- 2 subdivisions: sympathetic & parasympathetic
10
Q
sympathetic nervous system
A
- subdivision of autonomic nervous system (of efferent division of PNS)
- activates and prepares body for vigorous activity, stress, and emergencies
11
Q
parasympathetic nervous system
A
- subdivision of autonomic nervous system (of efferent division of PNS)
- operates during normal situations
- permits digestion, conserves energy
12
Q
brainstem
A
- connection btwn brain and spinal chord
- contains medulla, midbrain, pons
- cranial nerves project from here
