Cerebrum Flashcards
cerebrum overview
- foremost and largest part of brain (83% of total brain mass)
- 2 hemispheres, each with 4 lobes
4 lobes of cerebrum
- frontal
- parietal
- occipital
- temporal
left cerebral hemisphere controls
right side of body
right cerebral hemisphere controls
left side of body
gyri
raised ridges of cerebrum
sulci
shallow grooves that separate gyri
transverse fissure
divides cerebrum from cerebellum
median longitudinal fissure
divides left + right cerebral hemispheres
cerebral cortex
- outer portion of cerebrum
- highly convoluted, gray colored
- contains primary + association areas
frontal lobe functions (3)
- higher level executive functions
- motor functions
- voluntary muscle action
parietal lobe function
- receives sensory info from receptors in mouth/skin
occipital lobe function
- interprets visual input
temporal lobe functions (2)
- contains sensory area for hearing
- contains sensory area for smell
primary areas of cerebral cortex
receive and send info for one type of sensory or motor information
association areas
- integrate more than one type of sensory info for personal action
- all 4 lobes have them
primary motor cortex
- aka: precentral gyrus, somatomotor cortex
- association area of frontal lobe
- controls voluntary motor movement for all body parts
broca’s area
- association area of frontal lobe
- responsible for speech production
wernicke’s area
- association area of temporal lobe
- responsible for speech comprehension
cerebrum responsible for (4)
- consciousness
- intelligence/reasoning/higher thinking
- controlling activity of other parts of brain (override capabilities)
- acts on sensory input via thalamus (controls cerebellum)
consciousness
state of being awake + aware of surroundings
