Neurology and Neurocytology Flashcards
What is the function of oligodendrocytes?
Schwann cells/ aka they form the myelin sheath
What is the function of astrocytes?
They form a protective barrier between neurons, this is important in development and inflammation
What is the function of Microglia?
They remove harmful bacteria in the brain
What do excitatory neurons do to the resting potential
they move it towards the threshold
What do inhibitory neurons do to the resting potential?
they make the resting potential more negative and move it away from the threshold
What is the function of the cell body?
makes proteins that are necessary for neuronal function
What is the function of dendrites?
they receive signals from other neurones
What is the function of the axon?
It transmits electrical impulses to pre-synaptic terminals
What is the function of pre-synaptic terminals?
They transmit chemical signals to adjacent cells
What is the function of the myelin sheath?
Speeds up conduction
What first establishes repolarisation?
The opening of potassium channels and therefore the diffusion of potassium out of the cell
Then the active transport of sodium out of the cell
What is temporal summation?
several EPSP’s from one neuron
What is spatial summation?
Several EPSP’s from different neurons
activation of multiple pre-synaptic terminals
