Functional anatomy of the nervous system Flashcards
What are the two parts of the nervous system?
the CNS and the PNS
What is the Central Nervous System?
The Brain and Spinal Cord
What is the Peripheral Nervous System?
Anything that comes out of the brain// spinal cord
What are the three embryonic divisions of the brain?
Forebrain, Midbrain and Hindbrain
What makes up the forebrain
Cerebrum, Thalamus and Hypothalamus
What makes up the hindbrain?
Pons, Cerebellum and Medulla
What is another name for the cerebrum?
Telencephalon
What is the function of the cerebrum?
It is the largest part of the brain and carries higher functions
What is the Cerebrum divided into?
Two Cerebral hemispheres
What kind of matter is found on the cerebrum superficially and on the inside?
Grey matter superficially and Central white matter that contains neurons and nuclei
What is the Cerebral cortex?
thin, superficial layer of grey matter
What is the name of the outward and inwards folds found on each hemisphere?
gyri and sulci
What is the function of the cerebral cortex?
Receives input from sensory organs to interpret vision and initiate skeletal muscle
What is grey matter made up from?
neuron cell bodies
What kind of fibres does white matter contain?
Myelinated nerve fibres that have major neural connection and the right and left cerebral hemispheres
What are the three types of fibres that make up white matter?
Association, Commissural and Prohection
What is the function of the association fibres?
They interconnect adjacent gyri with each other (within the same hemisphere)
What is the function of the Commissural fibres?
Connects the two hemispheres together
What is the function of the projection fibres?
Connects the cerebral cortex with the brain and spinal cord
What are the three main regions of the cerebral cortex?
Motor, Sensory and Association
What lobes is the cerebrum divided into?
Frontal, Occipital, Parietal , Temporal and piriform
What is the Diencephalon?
Most rostral part of the brainstem (part of the forebrain)
