Email Server
Servers that are set up to compose a message and send it to another user
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
Specifies how emails should be delivered from one mail domain to another. Operates over port 25
Post-Office Protocol version 3 (POP3)
Older e-mail protocol which operates over port 110. Downloads messages from a server to the local machine. Deletes the e-mail from the server once downloaded. This causes a ton of limitations sine e-mails now can be accessed by a single person from multiple computers and devices.
Internet Message Access protocol (IMAP)
Mail retrieval protocol. Operates over port 143 and can connect to a server and received and read messages. Marks message in te server as read once read. This is a great way of keeping all your devices in sync.
Microsoft Exchange
Mailbox server environment designed for Windows-based domain environments. Uses POP3, IMAP, and SMTP
