Neck Triangles Flashcards
What are the borders of the posterior triangle of the neck
Posterior - trapezius
Anterior - scm
Under - middle 3rd of clavicle
Where is the apex of the posterior triangle
Point between scm and the trapeziusat occipital nuchal line
What is the roof to the posterior triangle
Investing layer of deep cervical fascia
What su the floor to the posterior triangle
Deep cervical fascia
Prevertebral fascia
What su the main contents of the posterior triangle
Spinal accessory nerve CN 11
Where does the spinal accessory nerve arise from
The spinal cord rather than the base of the brain like the other cranial nerves
What su the pathway of the spinal accessory nerve
From spinal cord loop through foramen magnum joins with vagus then split again to supply diff features
What does the spinal accessory do
Somatic motor innervation to scm and trapezius
Motor from anterior roots sensory posterior roots
How do u test the spinal accessory nerve
Scm by rotation and looking up
Trapezius by shrugging shoulders
What are the borders of the anterior triangle
Superior - border of mandible
Middle - midline of the neck
Sides - anterior scm
Where is the apex of the anterior I triangles
Jugular notch
What is the roof of the anterior triangle
Subcutaneous tissue and platysma
What is the floor to the anterior triangle
Pharynx
Larynx
Thyroid gland
What are the divisions of the anterior triangle
Supra hyoid - su mental and submandibular
infrahyoid - carotid and muscular
What flames the floor of the mouth
Mylohyoid
What triangle isn’t dual sided
Sub mental underneath the mental protuberance
What are the borders of the sub mental triangle
Anterior and posterior bellies of digrastic
Hyoid bone
What is the floor of the su mental triangle
Mainly formed by the mylohyoid muscle
What are the contents of the submental triangle
Anterior jugular vein
Lymph nodes submental
What do the submental lymph nodes drain
Drain lymph from the tongue tip
Lower lip
Lower incisors
What are the contents of the submandibular triangle
Digrastic muscle Mylohyoid Submandibular gland Facial artery Facial vein Submandibular lymph nodes Hypoglossal nerve
What does the hypoglossal nerve do
Pass under the tongue so can supply all muscles of tongue intrinsic and extrinsic except palatoglosses
And then forms loop off of it which is the Ansa cerbicalis
What are the contents of the carotid triangle
Carotid sheath which contains internal jugular vein common carotid artery (internal) and the vagus nerve
Lymph nodes deep cervical
When does the common carotid artery bifurcate
At level of laryngeal prominence
What is the Ansa cervicalis
Made up of hypoglossal nerve
C1- motor - descendens hypoglossi
C2,3- motor - descendens cervicalis
What does the Ansa cervicalis do
Motor supply to strap muscles except the thyrohyoid which is solely supplied by c1
What are the contents of the muscular triangle
Strap muscles
What are the strap muscles
Omohyoid
Sternohyoid
Sternothyroid
Thyrohyoid
What is the innervation of the strap muscles
All innervated by Ansa cervicalis excite thyrohyoid
What are the neck triangles
Posterior Anterior - submandibular - sub mental - muscular - carotid
