Q

Deep cervical fascial of the neck

A
  1. Investing layer: splits to enclose trapezius and SCM . (CN XI)
    A. Encloses submandibular gland -> fibrous capsule parotid gland
    B. Prevents infection -> deep layers => won’t spread past manubrium
  2. Pretracheal
    A. Muscular layer:
    1. Infrahyoid m
    2. Omohyoid -> blend w/ carotid sheath
      B. Visceral layer: anterior tracheal structures
    3. Cont w/ buccopharyngeal fascia posterior tracheal structures -> pharynx
      C. Infection between muscular and visceral pretracheal -> superior mediastinum

Q

Prevertebral fascia of neck

A
  1. Base of skull -> T3 -> blends anterior longitudinal lig -> upper limb
  2. Sympathetic trunk and roots of brachial plexus
  3. Infection -> neck -> swelling behind SCM
  4. Infection -> retropharyngeal space -> bulge in pharynx -> difficulty swallowing and speaking -> mediastinum

Q

Ansa cervicalis

A

Motor component of cervical plexus

  1. Superior root: from anterior ramus C1 joins w/ CN XII
  2. Inferior root: anterior rami C2 and C3
  3. Connection: superior root loops down around and up to join descending fibers from inferior root
