Neck Flashcards
1
Q
Superficial fascia of the neck
A
Contains
- Sensory n.
- Vessels
- Superficial lymph nodes
- Platysma m.
2
Q
Deep cervical fascial of the neck
A
- Investing layer: splits to enclose trapezius and SCM . (CN XI)
A. Encloses submandibular gland -> fibrous capsule parotid gland
B. Prevents infection -> deep layers => won’t spread past manubrium - Pretracheal
A. Muscular layer:- Infrahyoid m
- Omohyoid -> blend w/ carotid sheath
B. Visceral layer: anterior tracheal structures - Cont w/ buccopharyngeal fascia posterior tracheal structures -> pharynx
C. Infection between muscular and visceral pretracheal -> superior mediastinum
3
Q
Prevertebral fascia of neck
A
- Base of skull -> T3 -> blends anterior longitudinal lig -> upper limb
- Sympathetic trunk and roots of brachial plexus
- Infection -> neck -> swelling behind SCM
- Infection -> retropharyngeal space -> bulge in pharynx -> difficulty swallowing and speaking -> mediastinum
4
Q
Carotid sheat
A
- Carotid a.
- Internal jugular v.
- CN X
- Deep lymph nodes
- Sympathetic chain
- Blends investing an pretracheal muscle fascia layers

6
Q
Ansa cervicalis
A
Motor component of cervical plexus
- Superior root: from anterior ramus C1 joins w/ CN XII
- Inferior root: anterior rami C2 and C3
- Connection: superior root loops down around and up to join descending fibers from inferior root
7
Q
Sternocleidomastoid (SCM)
A
- Prox: mastoid process
- Distal: superior manubrium
- Innervation: CN XI
- Fxn
A. Bilateral : flex neck and extend head
B. Unilateral : rotate head opp side and lateral flex same side
