Muscles of the Upper Limb 2 Flashcards
what are the anterior forearm muscles?
pronators (teres snd quadratus)
flexor carpi (radialis and ulnaris)
palmaris longus
flexor digitorum (superficialis and profundus)
flexor pollicis longus
what is the function of the pronator teres?
pronates forearm
what is the function of the flexor carpi radialis?
flexes and abducts hand
what is the function of the palmaris longus?
tenses fascia of palm
what is the function of the flexor carpi ulnaris?
flexes and adducts hand
what is the function of the flexor digitorum superficialis?
flexes hand and 2nd-5th digits
what is the function of the flexor digitorum profundus?
flexes 2nd-5th digits
what is the function of the flexor pollicis longus?
flexes thumb
what is the function of the pronator quadratus?
pronates forearm
what is the cubital fossa?
triangular shaped region on the anterior elbow surface
what forms the medial boundary of the cubital fossa?
pronator teres
what forms the lateral boundary of the cubital fossa?
brachioradialis
what forms the superior boundary of the cubital fossa?
line through medial and lateral epicondyles
what forms the floor of the cubital fossa?
supinator and brachialis
what forms the roof of the cubital fossa?
fascia, adipose, skin
what does the cubital fossa contain?
radial nerve
biceps brachii tendon
brachial artery and radial and ulnar branches
median nerve
What is the medical relevance of the cubital fossa?
common area for drawing blood, median cubital vein
what are flexor retinaculum
thickenings of the antebrachial fascia that bind down the flexor tendons, forms the roof of the carpal tunnel
what is the function of the palmar aponeurosis?
continuous with flexor retinaculum and receives tendon of the palmaris longus (invests muscles of palm)
what is the carpal tunnel?
an osseofascial space posterolaterally by carpals and anteriorly by flexor retinaculum
what does the carpal tunnel contain?
median nerve
tendons of flexor digitorum superficialis, flexor digitorum profundus, flexor pollicis longus
what is the common flexor sheath?
synovial sheath in the carpal tunnel and contains tendons of the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor digitorum superficialis
what is the function of the common flexor sheath?
reduces friction as tendons pass through the tunnel
what are the posterior forearm muscles?
brachioradialis
extensor carpi radialis (longus and brevis)
extensor digitorum
extensor carpi ulnaris
supinator
abductor pollicis longus
extensor pollicis (longus and brevis)
extensor indicis
what is the function of the brachioradialis
flexes forearm
what is the function of the extensor carpi radialis
extends and abducts hand
what is the function of the extensor digitorum
extends 2nd-5th digits
what is the function of the extensor carpi ulnaris?
extends and adducts hand
what is the function of the supinator
supinates forearm
what is the function of the abductor pollicis longus
abducts and extends thumb
what is the function of the extensor pollicis longus and brevis
extends the thumb
what is the function of the extensor indicis?
extends 2nd digit
what is the anatomical snuff box formed by?
medially by tendons of the extensor pollicis longus
laterally by tendons of extensor pollicis brevis and adductor pollicis longus
what does the anatomical snuff box contain?
radial artery
what are extensor retinaculum?
thickenings of antebrachial fascia that bind down extensor tendons
what envelops the extensor tendons? why?
synovial sheaths, reduce friction as tendons pass under extensor retinaculum
