Mouth Ulcer symptom
- white/yellow centre with outer inflamed red ring
- on tongue, lips and cheeks
- occurs from 1 to 5 up to 5mm in size
Mouth Ulcer referral
- > 10mm (can be sign of ulcerative colitis)
- associated recurrent diarrhoea
Mouth Ulcer Referral (Cancerous symptoms)
- > 3 weeks (in smokers)
- painless
- associated weight loss
What medications adverse drug reactions can cause mouth ulcers
- NSAIDs
- Sufasalazine
- Methotrexate
Mouth Ulcers >5mm Referral (crop sizes)
if large up to 30mm and appearing on pharynx and palate it can be
— Major Apthous Ulcers
if small numerous (up to 100) and form together affecting mouth floor or gums it can be
— Herpetiform Ulcers
OTC treatment: Chlorhexidine
Corsodyl Mouthwash (12+)
prevents bacterial infection
- causes reversible brown staining of teeth and tongue
OTC treatment: Local Analgesia
Difflam Oral rinse (12+)
- Benzydamine
Bonjela Adult (16+)
- Chlorine Salicylate
OTC Treatment: Local Anaesthetic
- Lidocaine (iglu gel)
- Benzocaine (orajel)
OTC treatment: topical corticosteroids
anti-inflamamtory
- Hydrocortisone Buccal Pellets (12+)
Mouth Ulcers Advice
- avoid spicy, salty or acidic or hot foods/drink
- brush teeth before chlorhexidine (helps reducing staining and rinse)
