What is Scarlet Fever
A
Pink, red, itchy sandpaper rash

Pre scarlet fever symptoms
A
- Sore throat
- headache
- high temp
- flushed cheeks
- swollen tongue (red)
- loss of appetite
- swollen lymph glands

Rash development
A
Develops 12 to 48 hours after initial symptoms
First appears on chest and stomach before spreading

Referral criteria
A
- requires antibiotics
(amox for 10 days)

Symptomatic relief OTC
A
- Paracetamol (fever)
- Antihistamines (relieves itching)

Scarlet fever advice
A
- very contagious (keep children off school for at least 24 hours after starting antibiotic
- Avoid sharing towels and clothes
- Cover mouth when sneezing and coughing
