Symptoms of Dysmenorrhoea
A
- lower abdominal cramps (begins day before period and lasts 2 to 3 days)
Associated Symptoms
- back pain
- nausea
- diarrhoea
- fatigue

Dysmenorrhoea referral
A
- secondary Dysmenorrhoea
- pain increases on onset of (uteral substance discharge)
- women >30 years with new or worsening symptoms

A
- vaginal bleeding (post menopause)
- oral contraceptive use
- intermenstrual pain and bleeding
- pain with late period
- presence of fever

First Line OTC treatment
A
Ibuprofen (12+)

Second Line OTC treatment
A
Naproxen (Pharmacist only medication) (15 to 50 years)
Feminax Ultra

Dose of Naproxen
A
- TWO 250mg tablets at first
- ONE 250mg 6 to 8 hours later if needed
Max TDS
Max 3 days in one month

Naproxen counselling
A
swallow whole with water after food

Cautions with Naproxen
A
Asthma

Naproxen contraindications
A
- GI events (peptic ulcers, GI bleeding)
- severe heart failure/ liver disease
- previous stroke
- anticoagulants
- NSAID hypersensitivity
- pregnancy

Why is previous stroke an NSAID contraindication
A
because NSAIDS cause cardiovascular events
