Dermatitis referal
- infected skin
- severe rash (widespread)
- broken skin
- face
- anogenital areas
- OTC failure >7 days
- symptoms for more than 2 weeks
OTC treatment: Emollients
hydrates and soothes
- Dermol 500 Lotion
- Aveeno, Centreban cream
- Epaderm ointment
- soap substitutes (aqueous cream)
- bath additives (oilatum bath oil)
OTC treatment: Steroids
reduces inflammation
- hydrocortisone (10+)
- clobetasone (12+)
apply thinly once or twice daily
Licensing for OTC steroid topical
- max 15g pack size
- max 7 day usage
- not for broken/ infected skin
- not for face or genitals
- not for pregnancy
Topical steroids contraindications
- acne
- rosacea
- skin infections
OTC treatment: Itch relief
- Calamine / Crotamiton (Eurax)
Dermatitis Advice
- do not apply a lot of steroids as can thin skin
- apply emollient first, 30 mins to apply steroid
- use soap substitutes
