the internal mechanisms and external stimuli which arouse and direct our behaviour
what is drive
directed, motivated and ‘energised’ behaviour towards achieving a goal
what is intrinsic motivation
the drive from within to perform a task for own sake.
driven by personal satisfaction
eg wanting to run a faster 100m to get a pb
what is extrinsic motivation
the drive to perform in order to achieve a tangible award
driven by external factors
eg taking part in rugby tournament to win a trophy
eg trying hard in training for praise from coach
uses and effects of intrinsic motivation
-performers of all experience
-high personal satisfaction - (relate to CAB attributions)
-helps set new goals that are personal
-long term results
uses and effects of extrinsic motivation
-good for first time/cognitive performer
-provides clear evidence of success through tangible reward
-helps recipient gain status within peer group
-short lived effect
negative of extrinsic motivation
loses impact of the opportunity for reward is taken away
