guidance Flashcards
what is guidance
the way than information is given to a performer
what is verbal guidance
often used with visual
used to describe the action and explain how to perform an activity
when should verbal guidance be used
-for advanced learners as information is more complex and technical
advantages of verbal guidance
-more effective for autonomous learners
-can be motivational and give confidence if positive
-can be quick
disadvantages of verbal guidance
-can lead to inaccurate performance if inaccurate of misinterpreted
-can be boring
-can lead to information overload
example of verbal guidance
a coach telling a performer how they can improve their technique
a coach explaining a drill
what is visual guidance
often used with verbal guidance
using demos, videos, charts and other visual aids
when is visual guidance used
-for all stages - especially cognitive - demos help form mental image
-video analysis used for advanced performers
-to modify environment eg mark to take off
advantages of visual guidance
-helps create mental image
-good for beginners
-more effective if done by role model
disadvantages of visual guidance
-demo could be incorrect
-can be too quick for performer to process
-static images don’t show how the movement was produced
example of visual guidance
coach performs skill
what is manual guidance
involves the coach holding and physically manipulating the learner to air learning
example of manual guidance
coach guiding a tennis player through a for hand drive
what is mechanical guidance
-involves the use of equipment to help support the learner
-allows the learner to get a kinaesthetic feel of the activity
example of mechanical guidance
harness for diving somersaults
foam block between legs of swimmer to focus on arm technique
advantage of manual and mechanical guidance
-can be useful for all levels
-develop kinaesthesis
-can reduce fear and increase safety
disadvantages of manual and mechanical guidance
-performer can become too reliant and not develop the ability to perform the skill independently
-can lead to false sense of kinesthesis
-can restrict performer so they don’t fully perform the skill and feel of the movement is different
