Module 12: Cerebral Cortex ; Parts of the Brain Flashcards
Brain Stem
Connects the cerebrum to the spinal cord.
Consist of the midbrain, medulla oblongata, and the pons.
Coordinates & relays motor signals
Controls supporting nervous system functions such as: breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, digestion.
Cerebellum
Base of the skull
Controls motor movements coordination, balance, equilibrium, and muscle tone.
Relays info. between the muscles and the cerebral cortex for motor control.
Also incharge of some memory for relex motor acts.
Occipital Lobe
Rear of the cerebral cortex.
Main center for visual processing (color, shape, & distance)
Motion detection
Visual Cortex
Receives visual input form the retina (gets interpreted in the occipital lobe)
Rear part of the occipital lobe
Parietal Lobe
Back-top of the brain.
Involved in the reception & processing of sensory info. from the body
Orientation & perception
Attention & language
Frontal Lobe
Front of the brain (behind the forehead.
Involved in movement, making decisions, problem solving, & planning.
+ higher order functions, concentration & attention span, reasoning/critical thinking, judgement, impulse control, habitual memory and motor activities, emotional response & empathy, expressive language & meaning
Temporal Lobe
Side of the head (above ears)
Organizes auditory information, production of language & speech, & emotional responses
comprehension of sound and speech ; processes auditory information
Aids in language and reading
Memory, hearing, sequencing, organization
Medulla
Top of the brainstem Controls heartbeat & breathing
Pons
Above the Medulla
Coordinates movement and other autonomic functions.
Responsible for nonsexual arousal, sleep, and relaying information between the cerebellum & cerebral cortex
Reticular Formation
Throughout the brainstem
Essential for arousal (sleeping, walking, and pain perception)
Regulates awareness & attention
Filter incoming stimuli to send to other brain areas
Thalamus
Above the brainstem
Sensory info. in regards to hearing, seeing, touching, and tasting
Hippocampus
Limbic System; Around the Medulla
Central to learning & memory
Amygdala
Limbic System; End of the Hippocampus
memory consolidation and emotion (fear and aggression)
Processes long term emotional memories
Helps recognize and avoid future threats
Cerebrum & Cerebral Cortex
Cerebrum: both hemispheres
Cerebral Cortex: outermost layer
Plays a role in perception, awareness, thought, memory, language, & consciousness
Motor Cortex
Rear of Frontal Lobe
Control voluntary movement & sends messages to the body from the brain
Part of the Frontal lobe
