McMurry (Kap.5,9) Flashcards

Q

What is the definition of isomers?

A

compounds with the same chemical formula, but different structures.

Covers over:

  • constitutional isomers.
  • stereoisomers.

Under stereoisomers there are:
1) cis and trans isomers.

2) enantiomers (mirror images) and diastereomers (non mirror images)

3) configurational diastereomers and cis-trans diastereomers.

Q

what is constitutional isomers?

A

Compounds whose atoms are connected differently but have the same chemical formula.

1) different carbon skeleton

2) different functional groups.

3) different positions of functional groups.

Q

what is stereoisomers?

A

compounds whose atoms are connected in the same order, but with different spatial arrangement.

1) enantiomers and diastereomers.

2) cis and trans arrangements of cycloalkanes.
