Q

How can you predict whether a given molecule is chiral or nor?

OBS! chiraliry is the property of the entire molecule whereas a chirality center is describing one chiral c-atom.

A

If the molecule has a plane of symmetry, then it does not have chirality - because then it must have the identical molecule of its mirror image and hence must be nonchiral /achiral.

Q

How do you determine if the 4 groups are different bounded to the C?

A

consider them as substituents. If one atoms differ on two of the groups, then they are not the same and can be considered as two different groups.

Also, the chemical formula of the two groups bounded to the C can be the same, but the constitutional isomer is not the same, which makes them different (especially in a ring, if one side has a double bonded O some carbons before the other side).

Q

is a c-atom double or triple bonded to an atom chiral?

A

No, because it has to be bounded to 4 different groups.
