McMurry (kap.3,5) Flashcards
Does alkanes have high affinity for other substances?
(Affinity refers to the attraction or tendency of one substance to combine with another)
No, alkanes have low affinity.
They occur in some chemical reactions, even though they are considered chemically inert most of the times.
What chemical reactions are those?
- Alkanes reaction with oxygen (under forbrænding), carbon dioxide and water is formed.
- Alkanes reaction with a halogen under ultraviolet light, leading to a mixture of halogenated products (ex. chlorinated product in use of Cl), anf HCl as product too.
Does the boiling and melting point increase or decrease a long with the growth of the alkane size?
both the boiling and melting point increase along with the growth of the alkane (molecular weight increase).
Does the increased branching in a alkane lower or rise the boiling and melting point?
It actually lowers the boiling and melting point.
-because of smaller surface area
-smaller dispersion forces (which means lower melting and boiling point).
