Q

They occur in some chemical reactions, even though they are considered chemically inert most of the times.

What chemical reactions are those?

A
  1. Alkanes reaction with oxygen (under forbrænding), carbon dioxide and water is formed.
  2. Alkanes reaction with a halogen under ultraviolet light, leading to a mixture of halogenated products (ex. chlorinated product in use of Cl), anf HCl as product too.

Q

Does the boiling and melting point increase or decrease a long with the growth of the alkane size?

A

both the boiling and melting point increase along with the growth of the alkane (molecular weight increase).

Q

Does the increased branching in a alkane lower or rise the boiling and melting point?

A

It actually lowers the boiling and melting point.

-because of smaller surface area
-smaller dispersion forces (which means lower melting and boiling point).
