Q

How can you predict, how an acid-base reaction will take place?

A

By looking at the pKa value of the two acids in the reaction.

The acid with the smaller pKa value = reacts as an acid.

The acid with the bigger pKa value = will react as an base in its conj. base form (because weaker acid = strong conj. base).

Q

Is there another way to predict the acid-base reaction?

A

Yes:

The product conj. base = weaker base then the starting base.

The product conj. acid = weaker acid then the starting acid.
