McMurry (Kap.3,2) Flashcards
What are alkanes?
By overlapping C-C single bonds in a chain, the family of alkanes are generated.
The overlap of a (SP3) Carbon with the overlap of another (SP3) carbon, which is a sigma bond.
Why are alkanes descripted as saturated hydrocarbons?
Because they only have C-C and C-H single bonds, and thus contain the maximum possible number of hydrogens per carbon.
Why are alkanes sometimes called “aliphatic compounds?”
Because many animal fats contain carbon chains similar to alkanes.
What are the difference between “straight chain alkane” and “branched chain alkane”
Straight chain alkanes have their carbons connected in a row, whereas branched chain alkanes have some of their carbons connected to the row like branches.
What is the term “isomers?” - more specifically “consitutional isomers”
Compounds that have the same formula, but different structures (ways the molecule is connected)
Does the number of possible isomers rise as the number of C-atoms in a molecule rise?
Yes, the possible structural arrangements of a molecule rise as the number of C in the molecule rise.
Hvad er “constitutional isomers?”
Forskellige consitutional isomers har forskellige forbindelser, med forskellige egenskaber men den samme kemiske formel/indhold.
Which suffix is added to the end of the name, to illustrate that it is an alkane?
-ane
What is the parent name of the 10 first alkanes?
1-methane
2-ethane
3-propane
4-butane
5-pentane
6-hexane
7-heptane
8-octane
9-nonane
10-decane
What is the suffix ending to illustrate that the molecule is an alkyl? (for example the side chains bound to the alkane chain.).
-yl
