McMurry (kap.1,3) Flashcards
What is the lowest-energy-arrangement otherwise called ground-state-electron configuration?
It is a listing of an atoms orbitals occupied by its electrons.
For C it is (1S(2),2s(2),2p(2).
Which 3 rules is followed when filling the electron configuration?
The Aufbau princip, Pauli exclusion principle, and Hunds law.
What is the Aufbau princip?
That the lowest energy orbitals get filled first
1 s before 2 s etc.
What is Paulis exclusion principle?
That the spin of an electron either can go up or down, and only two electrons can occupy an orbital, and they HAVE TO be of opposite spins.
What is Hunds law?
If two or more empty orbitals of the same energy level are available, one electron occupy each orbital with parallel spins, until all orbitals are half full, then you can fill the rest up.
