Mandibular Nerve Flashcards
What does the sensory division of the mandibular nerve supply
The mucous membranes of mouth and cheek
Anterior 2/3rds of tongue
Lower teeth
Skin of lower jaw
Side of head and scalp
Meninges of anterior and middle cranial fossae
What does the motor division of the mandibular nerve supply
Muscles of mastication
Tensor tympani
Tensor veli palatini
Mylohyoid
Anterior belly of digastric
What is the origin of the mandibular nerve
Arises in middle cranial fossa from trigeminal ganglion
Large sensory and small motor component
What is the course of the mandibular nerve
Passes through ovale foramen
Otic ganglion attached to stem
Almost immediately divides into anterior and posterior branches
What are the 3 motor branches of the main trunk of the mandibular nerve
Nerve to medial pterygoid
Nerve to tensor tympani
Nerve to tensor veli palatini
What is the main trunk branch of the mandibular nerve
Meningeal branch
What is the sensory branch of the main trunk of the mandibular nerve
Nervous spinosus
What are the 3 motor branches of the anterior trunk of the mandibular nerve
Masseter
Lateral pterygoid
Temporal
What is the sensory branch of the anterior trunk of the mandibular nerve
Buccal
What are the 2 sensory branches of the posterior trunk of the mandibular nerve
Auriculotemporal
Lingual
What is the sensory and motor branch of the posterior of the mandibular nerve
Inferior alveolar - nerve to mylohyoid (motor) and mental (sensory)
What is the auricular branch of the auriculotemporal nerve
Auricle, external acoustic meatus, outer aspect of tympanic membrane
What is the articular branch of the auriculotemporal nerve
TMJ
What are the secretory fibres of the auriculotemporal nerve
Parotid gland
What is the temporal branch of the auriculotemporal nerve
Overlying skin and lateral aspect of scalp
What is the function of the lingual nerve
Sensation to anterior 2/3rds tongue
Sensation to mucosa of floor of mouth and mandibular lingual gingivae
Where is the lingual nerve
Joined by chorda tympani (branch of VII, infraterporal fossa)
What is the innervation of the mucosa of anterior 2/3rds of tongue
Lingual branch of mandibular nerve general sensory
Chorda tympani branch of VII special sensory
What is the innervation of the mucosa of posterior 1/3rd of tongue
IX lingual branch general and special sensory
What is the innervation of the epiglottis and oesophagus
X superior laryngeal
What is the innervation of tongue muscles
XII
Palatoglossus innervated by pharyngeal plexus (IX,X,XI)
Where does the chorda tympani branch go
Leaves CN VII within facial canal of petrosal temporal bone and enters middle ear passes anteriorly across medial aspect of tympanic membrane and exits from skull through petrotympanic fissure
Passes anteriorly and inferiorly, medial to spine of sphenoid and joins posterior aspect of lingual nerve deep to inferior border of lateral pterygoid m continues as part of lingual nerve and is carried to FOM
What is the location of the otic ganglion
Infratemporal fossa just below foramen ovale
What is the innervation of the parotid gland
Parasympathetic components of glossopharyngeal nerve from otic ganglion
Where is the retromolar fossa
Lies immediately behind last mandibular molar just under mucosa
