Lung Cancer Flashcards
Lung Cancer is also known as?
Bronchogenic Carcinoma
Lung cancers arise from from a single transformed epithelial cell in the
Tracheobronchial airways
What are the 2 types of lung cancer?
*small cell lung cancer (SCLC)
*non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
is the most prevalent carcinoma of the lung in both men and women
Adenocarcinoma
Large cell carcinoma is also known as
Undifferentiated Carcinoma
occurs peripherally as peripheral masses or nodules and often metastasizes.
Adenocarcinoma
is a fast growing tumor that tends to arise peripherally.
Large cell carcinoma
It is localized in one lung and has not spread to
lymph nodes or other parts of the body.
Stage I Lung cancer
It still confined to the chest but may spread to nearby
lymph nodes or invade local tissues like chest wall.
Stage II
It has spread to lymph nodes in the center of the chest or to
nearby structures such as heart, esophagus, or trachea.
Stage III
it has spread to other parts of the body, such as brain,
bones, liver, or adrenal glands.
Stage IV
It is performed to search for pulmonary density, a solitary pulmonary nodule (coin lesion), atelectasis, and infection.
Chest X-ray
It is used to identify small nodules not easily visualized on the chest x-ray and also to serially examine areas for
lymphadenopathy.
CT Scan
It is commonly used to diagnose lung cancer; it provides a detailed study of the tracheobronchial tree and allows for brushings, washings, and biopsies of suspicious areas.
Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy
Allows visualization and sampling of lymph nodes and masses adjacent to the trachea or bronchi.
Endobronchial ultrasound biopsy
