ACUTE PANCREATITIS Flashcards
Two main types of acute pancreatitis:
*Mild (interstitial pancreatitis)
*severe (necrotizing pancreatitis)
a more widespread and complete enzymatic digestion of the gland characterizes what type of pancreatitis
Necrotizing Pancreatitis
Self-digestion of the pancreas by its own proteolytic enzymes, principally _______, causes acute pancreatitis.
Trypsin
is the major symptom of pancreatitis that causes the patient to seek medical care
Severe abdominal pain
the pain that typically occurs in pancreatitis
Midepigastrium
diagnosis of acute pancreatitis is based on the fulfillment of two out of three following criteria:
*history of upper abdominal pain
*changes in serum/amylase levels
*typical findings on imaging
may be prescribed to decrease pancreatic activity by inhibiting secretion of gastric acid.
H2 antagonists such as Cimetidine
provides a pragmatic approach to pain management in patients with pancreatitis.
Analgesia Ladder
is the initial diagnostic test that should be performed for patients in whom there is a suspicion of chronic pancreatitis.
